The summer holidays are close. NSW schools break up on Thursday 17 December, and most other states finish within days of that. But there's a whole stretch of November weekends between now and then, and that's where the good stuff is hiding.

## The cinemas are calmer. Sessions are easier to get. Disney opens its new witchy adventure *Hexed* the week before December starts, and Peppa Pig arrives with a festive big-screen special for the littlest viewers.

## We've sorted through what's showing now and what opens in the next four weeks. We've been honest about who each film actually suits, because a great movie for a ten-year-old can be a long, loud 100 minutes for a three-year-old. Whether you're chasing a rainy-Saturday plan, a pre-Christmas treat or a reason to try EVENT Junior's in-cinema playground, here's your shortlist.

#### So what's actually worth watching these school holidays? Here's your guide to what's on the big screen, plus how EVENT Cinemas' recent upgrades make family cinema trips genuinely enjoyable again.

## Hexed

G | 105 minutes

| Ages 7+ | In cinemas Thursday 26 November

Billie (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) has never quite fit in. She's impulsive, a little chaotic, and she's just been expelled. Then she loses the bracelet her mum told her never to take off, and the magic it was holding back bursts out. It pulls her out of the suburbs and into Hexe, a sprawling realm of witches. Her cautious, spreadsheet-loving mum Alice (Rashida Jones) follows her in. Together they team up with a grumpy three-eyed cat called Beef Roger (Walton Goggins) and face the sinister Queen Celeste (Jodie Foster), and they find out their family has a lot more history in Hexe than Alice ever let on.

**Why it works for families:** This is Disney Animation's big original for the year, and it's built around a mum-and-daughter team rather than a lone hero. That gives parents and kids something to talk about on the drive home. It's funny and fast, and it has the colour and creatures you'd expect from the studio behind *Encanto* and *Moana 2*. It does lean darker than usual for Disney, though. There's a properly menacing villain, monster chases and a few jump scares, so it's best for confident primary-schoolers and tweens.

**Verdict:** The pick of the season for kids 7 and up, and the one to book early.

**Perfect for:** Tweens, mother-daughter dates, fans of *Encanto* and witchy stories, and families with kids 7–12.

## Festive Fun with Peppa Cinema Experience

G | 60 mins

| Ages 2–5 | In cinemas from Saturday 14 November

It's baby Evie's very first Christmas, and Peppa, George and the whole Pig family are determined to make it a good one. This hour-long big-screen special strings together seven festive Peppa Pig episodes, with four brand-new songs to sing (and dance) along to. Expect decorations, muddy puddles, Daddy Pig being Daddy Pig and plenty of Christmas build-up. It's less a movie than a cosy cinema party for the under-fives, and it's paced for attention spans that are still growing.

**Why it works for families:** At around 60 minutes, this is the gentlest possible first cinema trip. It's short enough that no one gets restless, it has familiar characters so there are no surprises, and the episodes are short enough that a toilet break won't mean missing the plot. Pair it with an EVENT Junior session (Macquarie or Shellharbour) for a full morning out, or treat it as a low-stakes test run before the summer holidays.

**Verdict:** A sweet, stress-free first cinema trip for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Older siblings will be bored.

**Perfect for:** First-time cinema-goers, Peppa superfans, kids 2–5 and pre-Christmas outings with grandparents.

## PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie

G | 88 mins

| Ages 3–7 | In cinemas now

A wild storm sends the pups crash-landing on a tropical island, and it's not just any island. It's full of real, living dinosaurs. Ryder and the team, joined by a dino-mad new pup named Rex, have to work out how to survive alongside the island's giant residents. Then Mayor Humdinger turns up with mining plans that wake a volcano, and the rescue becomes a race to save the island itself. There's plenty of action, pup gadgets and dino roars, but it never tips into scary. Why it works for families: This is a G rating with a sub-90-minute runtime, which is exactly what you want for little legs and short attention spans. Pre-schoolers get their favourite pups plus dinosaurs, which is about as good as it gets at that age. Parents get a surprise-packed celebrity voice cast to spot (Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton among them).

**Verdict**: Bright, loud, short and reassuring: a safe bet for pre-schoolers and first-timers.

**Perfect for:** PAW Patrol fans, dinosaur-obsessed pre-schoolers and families with kids 3–7.

## Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom

G | 81 mins

| Ages 4+ | In cinemas now

Autumn has arrived at Mossy Bottom Farm, and so has pumpkin season. When the Farmer accidentally wrecks the flock's pumpkin patch, Shaun swaps his woolly coat for a mad-scientist's lab coat to fix things. His experiments go about as well as you'd expect. Before long the Farmer has vanished, strange noises are coming from the woods, and the flock is convinced there's a beast on the loose. Now it's up to Shaun to work out what's really lurking out there.

**Why it works for families:** Aardman's stop-motion comedy is almost entirely wordless, so pre-readers, kids still learning English and grandparents all laugh at the same moments. It plays with spooky ideas without ever being frightening, which makes it a good "first scary movie" for sensitive viewers. The handmade animation is a treat to see on a big screen. Catch it soon, though: as a Halloween-season title, its sessions are likely to thin out through November.

**Verdict:** The best all-ages pick on this list, and the easiest choice for mixed-age families.

**Perfect for:** Mixed-age groups, Wallace & Gromit fans, pre-readers and sensitive viewers.

## Tad and the Magic

PG | 94 mins

| Ages 6+ | In cinemas now

Tad Stones, the accidental archaeologist with more enthusiasm than skill, is back for a fourth big-screen adventure. When he accidentally sets loose an ancient spell, he and his crew have to put things right fast: his girlfriend Sara, the loyal Mummy, his parrot Belzoni and his dog Jeff. That means a magic-fuelled adventure where every wrong move makes things wilder. It's a bright, kid-sized take on the classic adventure movie, packed with slapstick.

**Why it works for families:** This is a fun stepping stone for primary-aged kids who are ready for adventure but not for big-blockbuster intensity. It's under 95 minutes and full of physical comedy, with a hero who wins through loyalty and quick thinking rather than superpowers. It flies a little under the radar next to the Hollywood releases, so sessions are often quieter, which is a bonus if your crew prefers a calmer cinema.

**Verdict:** A cheerful, low-pressure adventure that's an easy win with 6–10-year-olds.

**Perfect for:** Budding explorers, kids 6–10 and families after a quieter session.

 

## Forgotten Island

PG (mild themes, crude humour, violence, coarse language and scary scenes) | 108 mins

| Ages 8+ | In cinemas now

Jo and Raissa have been best friends their whole lives. On their last night together before life pulls them apart, they stumble through a portal to Nakali, an island crowded with creatures from Filipino folklore. With the help of Raww, a clumsy, good-hearted weredog (Dave Franco), they come face to face with the Manananggal (Lea Salonga), the island's most feared creature. Then they discover the catch: the way home will wipe their memories of each other. Now they have to escape before they forget the friendship that got them there.

**Why it works for families:** DreamWorks brings a mythology most Australian kids won't have seen on screen before, with a big-hearted story about friendship and change. It's well timed for kids heading into a new school or saying goodbye to a mate at the end of the year. At 108 minutes, and with genuinely creepy creature scenes, it's better suited to older primary kids and tweens than to little ones.

**Verdict:** A fresh, funny and surprisingly emotional adventure for 8+, and a good conversation-starter about friendship.

**Perfect for:** Tweens, best-friend outings, kids who love myths and monsters, and families with kids 8–13.

## For the Teens

Read before you book

- **Wildwood (M | 131 mins | Ages 15+):** This is Laika's stunning handmade fantasy from the studio behind *Coraline*. It's animated, but it's not a kids' film. It carries an M rating with consumer advice for suicide scenes and violence. Preview it yourself before taking younger teens.
- **The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (19 November | rating TO CONFIRM):** This is the big teen event film of the month. Wait for the Australian classification before booking for under-15s.

## Coming Next

Cinemas in the 2020s

### If you haven't tried EVENT Junior yet, this is your sign. It's a cinema built for kids 8 and under, with a playground right there in the precinct. There's a slide, a netted climbing gym, digital interactive games and play equipment that EVENT designed with input from actual kids.

at EVENT Cinemas

EVENT Cinemas has been rolling out significant upgrades across Australia that make family cinema trips genuinely better:

First launched at George Street Sydney in 2018, EVENT now operates 7 4DX locations across Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide). The moving seats and environmental effects (wind, water spray, scents) transform blockbusters into theme park rides — perfect for action films and Marvel movies, though maybe skip it for quiet dramas!

**Gold Class — Luxury Seating + Service**
